La figura de rodilla es el donante que encargó la pintura. Su vestido sobrio sugiere que era un oficial notario o legal, posiblemente de la ciudad veneciana de Parenzo (ahora Porec en Croacia). A la izquierda está probablemente Catalina de Siena; a la derecha están San Nicolás y San Francisco de Asís. La composición asimétrica y la intimidad del Niño, doblando para bendecir al donante, marcan un desarrollo de retablos formalmente compuestos anteriormente. Catena fue seguidora del gran pintor veneciano Giovanni Bellini.
