La terracotta di Pacetti, che rappresenta Achille e Penthesilea, ha vinto il premio Concorso Balestra nel 1773. Il tema della competizione, organizzata da Anton Raphael Mengs, fu la morte di Penthesilea. L’artista ha messo il gruppo su una drammatica base rocciosa, il pathos dei protagonisti accentuato dalla diagonale del braccio di Achille mentre lotta per tenere il corpo senza vita di Penthesilea, e dal mantello dell’eroe che, ancora gonfio di vento, accenna alla battaglia appena conclusa
