Als er für seine durchdringenden, manchmal sogar unbemerkten Porträts von Zirkus-Performern bekannt war, widersprach Kuhn den meisten Aspekten der europäischen Avantgarde während seiner Karriere. Kunstkritiker verlobten daher oft seine Arbeit als besonders "Amerikaner". Der Sitter für dieses Porträt ist Albert Driscoll, der für andere Werke von Kuhn modelliert. Verkleidet von Make-up und Kostüm, ist Driscolls "reale" Identität vom Betrachter verdeckt, während seine inerte Sitz Anwesenheit gegen die körperliche, mit Clowning verbunden. Driscolls toter Blick, also im Gegensatz zu Zirkus Jovialität, ist charakteristisch für Kuhns Porträtmalerei im Allgemeinen.
