Dopo la colossale sconfitta russa nella battaglia di Tannenberg (vedi n. 5), il fronte orientale si devolse in una massiccia guerra di attrito in cui le perdite russe di metà del 1915 ammontarono a quasi 1,4 milioni di vittime. Sul fronte domestico, la situazione è peggiorata come i prezzi alimentari sono aumentati, e i rifugiati hanno cercato la sicurezza. Le rivolte e i disordini politici che seguirono alla fine portarono alla guerra civile e all'abdicazione di Nicola II nel marzo 1917.
