Als Jugendlicher studierte Wang Xuehao mit einem Enkel von Wang Yuanqi, der ihn in den Elementen trainierte, die die Art des Ältesten Wang so geliebt machten: loses Dotting, kühne Zusammenspiel von solide und ungültige, und eine studierte Abscheulichkeit der Linie, die irgendwie nie von Eleganz wegging. Wang Xuehao, wie seine Mentoren vor ihm, interessierte sich besonders für den vierzehnten Jahrhundert Maler Huang Gongwang, dessen Art er hier interpretiert.
