Quando Allston espose per la prima volta questo dipinto al Boston Athenaeum nel 1831, mostrò anche la poesia, scritta da lui, che ispirava la composizione. Ha raccontato la storia romantica di "Sweet Inez", che aspetta sul posto del suo betrothal per il ritorno del suo amante, Isidore, dalla guerra. L'immagine di Allston di Inez è eterea e luminosa - un tipo facciale preferito nel suo lavoro - e il suo linguaggio del corpo rivela desiderio, speranza e paura. Sola in un paesaggio impressionante, è catturata in un momento di recupero e riflessione.
