Il Blue Rider è forse la pittura più importante di Kandinsky dai primi del 1900, prima che avesse completamente sviluppato il suo stile astratto di musica come suono. Il dipinto illustra un cavaliere intagliato in blu, accelerando attraverso un prato verdolino. L'astrazione intenzionale del dipinto aveva portato molti teorici dell'arte a proiettare le proprie rappresentazioni sulla figura, alcuni vedendo un bambino tra le braccia del cavaliere blu. Consentire agli spettatori di partecipare alle rappresentazioni dell'arte era una tecnica che Kandinsky avrebbe usato a grande frutto nelle sue molte opere successive, che divenne sempre più astratto come la sua carriera indossava.
