En la historia de Cimon y Pero, ya registrada en la antigüedad romana por el escritor latino Valerius Maximus, el sacrificio final y la caridad son centrales. El viejo Cimon fue sentenciado a hambre, pero su hija Pero que lo visitó en prisión lo mantuvo vivo por la lactancia secreta. El pintor de Amsterdam Willem Drost (1633-1659) muestra en su pintura el momento conmovedor conocido como Caritas Romana. El joven Pero se aleja de su mirada, alerta a su entorno, mientras que alimenta secretamente a su padre encadenado y delgado. En toda su vulnerabilidad, el viejo debilitado busca aferrarse al tejido de su falda. Descansar Pero a su vez pone su mano en su hombro desnudo.
