Nella storia di Cimon e Pero, già registrata nell'antichità romana dallo scrittore latino Valerius Maximus, il sacrificio definitivo e la carità sono centrali. Il vecchio Cimon fu condannato alla fame, ma sua figlia Pero che lo visitò in prigione lo tenne in vita segretamente allattandolo. Il pittore di Amsterdam Willem Drost (1633-1659) mostra nel suo dipinto il momento toccante conosciuto come la Caritas Romana. Il giovane Pero allontana lo sguardo, allerta al suo ambiente, mentre nutre segretamente il suo padre incazzato e disinvolto. In tutta la sua vulnerabilità, il vecchio indebolito cerca di tenere il tessuto della sua gonna. Riposare Pero a sua volta mette la mano sulla spalla nuda.
