Die chinesische Porzellanschale und der türkische Teppich in diesem stillen Leben wären beide Luxusimporte gewesen, hier unchalant mit Wein und Obst auf einem Holztisch platziert. Die Schale, eine Zitronenschale, die über ihre Lippe spillt, bilanziert auf einem Stück Brot, das die statische Anordnung der Objekte animiert. Laut Gerard de Lairesse, einem Maler und Schriftsteller der nächsten Generation, "übertraf Kalf andere im stillen Leben", obwohl "er nie wusste, wie er seine Bilder erklären, warum er dies oder das, aber einfach [bemalt] was seine Phantasie nahm."
