Il motivo di un giovane uomo a una finestra, indossando una donna alla sua ruota rotante, e i vaghi costumi tedeschi del XVI secolo e ambientazione, ha portato gli scrittori ad associare questo dipinto alla tragica storia di Faust e Marguerite. La seduzione dell'eroina innocente dal malvagio Faust fu un soggetto pittorico popolare nel XIX secolo, ispirato al drammatico poema di Goethe e alla sua messa in scena lirica di Charles Gounod. Indipendentemente dalle identità degli amanti, la scena romantica dipinta lussureggiante avrebbe fatto appello alla clientela ben tenuta di Bouguereau.
