Dieses seltene Werk des Schwarzen Landschaftsmalers William A. Harper stellt eine bukolische Szene in der französischen Landschaft dar. Kanadisch und Chicago-trainiert, Harper studierte auch informell in Paris mit Henry Ossawa Tanner, dem führenden afrikanischen amerikanischen Expatriate seiner Generation. Das Interesse von Harper an der Malerei regionaler Themen außerhalb der städtischen Umgebung von Paris wurde in diesen Jahren von vielen amerikanischen Künstlern geteilt. In Übergangswerken wie dieser Szene zeigte Harper den Einfluss auf seine Kunst der französischen Barbizon Maler sowie die Impressionisten und Post-Impressionisten.
