Questa rara opera del pittore paesaggista nero William A. Harper raffigura una scena bucolica nella campagna francese. Nato in Canada e addestrato a Chicago, Harper ha studiato informalmente a Parigi con Henry Ossawa Tanner, il principale espatriato afroamericano della sua generazione. L’interesse di Harper nella pittura di soggetti regionali al di fuori degli ambienti urbani di Parigi è stato condiviso da molti artisti americani in questi anni. In opere di transizione come questa scena, Harper ha rivelato l'influenza sulla sua arte dei pittori francesi Barbizon, così come gli impressionisti e post impressionisti.
