William Bell Scott era el hijo de un grabador escocés. Vino a Londres en la década de 1830 donde practicaba como grabador y también exhibía imágenes. Tenía estrecho contacto con los prerafaelitas y su círculo, principalmente a través de su amistad con Dante Gabriel Rossetti. En esta imagen contrasta con el debauchado príncipe oriental y su corte con Noé y su familia que, sólo demasiado consciente del significado de la nube ominosa en el cielo, están entrando en el Arca.
