William Bell Scott était le fils d'un graveur écossais. Il est venu à Londres dans les années 1830 où il a pratiqué comme graveur et a également exposé des images. Il avait un contact étroit avec les pré-raphaélites et leur cercle, principalement par son amitié avec Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Dans cette image, il contraste le prince de l'Est débauché et sa cour avec Noé et sa famille qui, seulement trop conscients de la signification du nuage odieux dans le ciel, entrent dans l'Arche.
