William Bell Scott era il figlio di un incisore scozzese. Venne a Londra nel 1830 dove si praticava come incisore e mostrava anche immagini. Aveva stretto contatto con i Pre-Raphaeliti e il loro cerchio, soprattutto attraverso la sua amicizia con Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In questa immagine contrasta il principe dissoluto orientale e la sua corte con Noè e la sua famiglia che, solo troppo consapevoli del significato della nube minacciosa nel cielo, stanno entrando nell'Arca.
