William Bell Scott war der Sohn eines schottischen Gravurs. Er kam in den 1830er Jahren nach London, wo er als Graveur praktizierte und auch Bilder ausstellte. Er hatte engen Kontakt mit den Pre-Raphaeliten und ihrem Kreis, vor allem durch seine Freundschaft mit Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In diesem Bild kontrastiert er den verarmten östlichen Prinzen und sein Gericht mit Noah und seiner Familie, die sich nur allzu bewusst von der Bedeutung der ominösen Wolke am Himmel in die Arche begeben.
