Blake dedicò gran parte dell'anno 1799–1800 a cinquanta scene visionarie tratte dalla Bibbia, una commissione che ricevette dal suo principale patrono, il impiegato del governo Thomas Butts. Circa trenta di queste opere sono state identificate; si pensa che alcuni non siano sopravvissuti a causa della fragilità dei materiali. Questa scena, la prima nel ciclo narrativo del Nuovo Testamento, illustra i versetti di Luca (I:11–13), in cui Gabriele appare ai giusti Zacharias, sommo sacerdote del Tempio ebraico di Gerusalemme, per annunciare che la moglie anziana e sterile di Zacharias darà alla luce un figlio, San Giovanni Battista.
