Endymion Porter war ein Lieblingsgericht von König Charles I, für den er Kunstwerke kaufte. Er wird hier als Jäger mit seinem Mord gezeigt, ein möglicher Hinweis auf den laufenden Bürgerkrieg. Seine Gönnerschaft der Künste wird durch die Statue von Apollo und die klassische Friese angezeigt, auf die er sich stützt. William Dobson malte dieses Porträt am ehemaligen Hof von König Charles in Oxford. Die Pose stammt aus einem Porträt des römischen Kaisers Vespasian von Titian, das dann in Charles I
