Nel 1805, questo dipinto vinse un premio studentesco per Shirreff mentre era all'Accademia dei Trustees. Ha scelto un episodio della vita di Mary, Regina di Scozia, che era stato collegato da Gilbert Stuart nella sua influente 'Storia di Scozia' (1783). In una lettera al padre il giovane artista ha scritto:
