En 1805, cette peinture a remporté un prix étudiant pour Shirreff alors qu'il était à l'Académie des administrateurs. Il choisit un épisode de la vie de Marie, Reine des Écossais, qui avait été relaté par Gilbert Stuart dans son influent «Histoire de l'Écosse» (1783). Dans une lettre à son père, le jeune artiste a écrit:
