Im Jahr 1805 gewann dieses Gemälde einen Studentenpreis für Shirreff, während er an der Trustees’ Academy war. Er wählte eine Episode aus dem Leben von Mary, Königin der Schotten, die von Gilbert Stuart in seiner einflussreichen „History of Scotland“ (1783) verwandt war.
