Schenck pintó esta representación precisa del nuevo depósito de la Compañía de Ferrocarriles de la Tercera Avenida al servir como superintendente de la compañía (1856–64). Completado en 1857 (y destruido apenas cuatro años más tarde por fuego), el hermoso edificio de ladrillos estaba situado en la Tercera Avenida entre las calles 65 y 66 de Nueva York. Además de destacar la popularidad contemporánea del tranvía tirado por caballos, Schenck también incluyó un globo de aire caliente en el cielo, identificado en pequeñas letras como el Atlántico. Los dueños del globo, John Wise y John LaMountain, esperaban volarlo a través del Océano Atlántico para iniciar una forma totalmente nueva de transporte, pero nunca tuvieron éxito.
