A metà del Seicento, l’opposizione politica “Patriot” si riferiva spesso ad un’idea dell’Inghilterra nell’età elisabettiana e prima, quando i re presumibilmente proteggevano il loro popolo contro i padroni ingiusti, e tutti vivevano in armonia e prosperità. Questa è la ‘vecchia Inghilterra’ di cui al titolo. Hogarth visitò la Francia nel 1748, e fu arrestato mentre schizzava le fortificazioni a Calais: questo viene mostrato all'estrema sinistra. Egli rappresenta i francesi da un rabble di soldati scrawny e un frate grasso, contrastando implicitamente la Francia con un'Inghilterra dove tutti mangiano manzo arrosto e non zuppe maigre (zuppa d'acqua).
