Mitte des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts bezeichnete die politische Opposition „Patriot“ oft eine Idee Englands im elitären Zeitalter und früher, als Könige angeblich ihr Volk vor ungerechten Meistern geschützten und alle in Harmonie und Wohlstand lebten. Dies ist das im Titel genannte „alte England“. Hogarth besuchte Frankreich im Jahre 1748 und wurde verhaftet, während er die Festungen in Calais skizzierte: dies zeigt sich links. Er repräsentiert die Franzosen von einem Knabbel von brülligen Soldaten und einem fetten Friar, kontrastiert Frankreich implizit mit einem England, wo alle essen Bratbeef und nicht Suppenmaigre (wasserige Suppe).
