Mary Edwards (1705–43), eine der reichsten Frauen ihrer Zeit, entzog ihre Ehe zu einem extravaganten Ehemann, obwohl dies tantamount, um ihren Sohn unrechtmäßig zu erklären. Sie war Hogarths Freund und wahrscheinlich seine bedeutendste Patronin während des Jahrzehnts 1733–43. Das monumentale Porträt von Miss Edwards, das prächtige Schmuckstücke und ein markantes rotes Kleid trägt, ist ein Meisterwerk in der Serie von Hogarths befehligen Porträts der Mittelklasse, die den berühmten Captain Coram umfasst. Die offene Schriftrolle zeigt neben dem Thema prominent die Tugenden der Freiheit und des Eigentums, die sie als Manager eines großen Vermögens geschätzt hätte.
