Un ritratto del grande attore del XVIII secolo David Garrick in uno dei suoi ruoli più famosi: Richard III di Shakespeare. In questo dipinto il Re è raffigurato nella sua tenda sul campo di Bosworth la notte prima della battaglia. Improvvisamente inizia da cattivi sogni: “le luci bruciano blu! Non e' mezzanotte morta? gocce temute fredde pendono sulla mia carne tremante ...” Una nota sinister si trova calpestata sotto il suo casco. Dice che il Re è stato tradito da elementi del suo esercito, ed è condannato. Hogarth era un amico intimo di Garrick e probabilmente intraprese questo ritratto come un'impresa di pubblicità. È significativo sia come primo grande ritratto teatrale britannico, che per la sua apparizione come pittura di storia. Lo spettatore è incoraggiato a pensare che l'evento storico reale sta accadendo, piuttosto che una performance sul palco.
