Paxton era un membro importante della Boston School of Painting che comprendeva anche Frank W. Benson e Edmund C. Tarbell. La Boston School fiorì durante il primo trimestre del XX secolo. La reputazione di Paxton poggiava con i suoi notevoli ritratti di donne eleganti, a volte esotiche, ambientate in interni opulenti di cui questo è un esempio eccezionale. Il kimono di seta della donna e il suggerimento dello schermo giapponese dipinto sono arricchiti da pesca, salmone e tonalità di corallo che riecheggiano la delicata resa dell’artista della carne del modello. Il lavoro dell’artista è stato caratterizzato, soprattutto, dalla sua esplorazione di colore, texture e luce.
