Lungo la sua strada verso la Spagna nel 1885 a Londra, Chase decise di presentarsi a James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), le cui opere aveva ammirato a lungo. Whistler lo ha esortato a rimanere più a lungo in modo da poter dipingere ritratti l'uno dell'altro. Nel descrivere Whistler, Chase echeggia i tratti che appaiono nei recenti ritratti del suo soggetto, come quello di Théodore Duret (13.20): una figura allungata, una tavolozza a basso-chiave, la spazzola libera e lo spazio ambiguo. Anche se Chase deve aver voluto onorare Whistler e il suo stile con queste eco, Whistler è stato offeso, chiamando l'opera un "lampoon mostruoso" e forse distruggendo il suo ritratto di Chase.
