In un'intervista pubblicata, ha descritto la sua prima dipendenza da oggetti di questo tipo: "Non potevo permettermi di assumere modelli come gli altri studenti hanno fatto, e sono stato costretto a dipingere la mia prima immagine da modelli di vita ancora." Il catalogo della vendita immobiliare di Harnett, che comprendeva una vasta collezione di tubi, attesta il suo interesse per tutta la vita in tali possedimenti tipicamente maschili.
