Nato in Gran Bretagna, Lydia Thompson succedette come ballerino, comico, regista e produttore. A Londra è diventata una attrice burlesque leader a 13 anni. Nel 1868 Thompson formò la sua famosa società, le British Blondes, e introdusse burlesque negli Stati Uniti. Anche se gli americani andarono in selva per i British Blondes, Thompson attirò le critiche selvaggie per il bawdiness dello show. Quando il proprietario del Chicago Times Wilbur Story ha fatto saltare la troupe per l'indecenza, Thompson e suo marito hanno messo su Story e lo hanno colpito. Anche se Thompson è stato arrestato e multato, ha insistito che valeva ogni centesimo.
