Un ingresso nel diario di Mount annota che iniziò un dipinto delle case del fratello e di un John Davis a Setauket, Long Island, nel novembre 1862, completandolo la primavera successiva. Il Monte ha composto il lavoro dalla finestra del suo studio portatile, un ambiente appositamente realizzato su ruote, da cui ha direttamente catturato dettagli convincenti e luce naturale limpida. La carezza di contenuto di genere qui è insolita per l'artista, ma ha scelto di commemorare la tranquillità del villaggio a inizio primavera, in contrasto con il turmoil della guerra civile, che era infuriato al momento.
