Anche se Homer fece la sua sede professionale a New York dal 1859 al 1883, concentrò la sua arte sulla vita rurale e balneare. Di solito ha disegnato e dipinto all'aperto durante le stagioni di buon tempo, poi ha fatto riferimento ai suoi studi per creare opere più ambiziose nel suo studio urbano. Probabilmente dipinse questo bozzetto d'olio durante una visita ad una famosa località balneare nel 1869. Per la tela finale, anche in vista in questa galleria, ha ampliato il primo piano per ospitare tre bagnanti, e ha migliorato la definizione dell'onda di rottura.
