Aunque Homer hizo su sede profesional en Nueva York de 1859 a 1883, centró su arte en la vida rural y costera. Normalmente dibujaba y pintaba al aire libre durante las temporadas de buen tiempo, luego se refirió a sus estudios para crear obras más ambiciosas en su estudio urbano. Probablemente pintó este bosquejo de aceite durante una visita a un popular complejo de playa en 1869. Para el lienzo final, también a la vista en esta galería, amplió el primer plano para dar cabida a tres baños, y mejoró la definición de la onda de ruptura.
