Una meditazione sulla vita marina, i tre ragazzi di Winslow Homer in una Dory con l'aragosta Pots harkens indietro al soggiorno estivo del pittore a Gloucester, Massachusetts, due anni prima. L'artista ha basato la composizione su due opere correlate, un'illustrazione per Harper's Weekly e un piccolo dipinto ad olio, entrambi completati nel 1873. Questo acquerello rappresenta una distillazione di questi disegni. Homer ha posto la barca più in profondità nello spazio e ha accentuato le posizioni precarie di trappole di aragosta sull'arco e ragazzi alla poppa. I suoi cambiamenti hanno ridotto la qualità aneddotica della scena, in modo che evoca non solo una stretta fetta di vita quotidiana, ma anche, più in generale, la preparazione dei ragazzi per l’età adulta.
