Un illustratore dotato, Winslow Homer si è trasferito a New York come giovane adulto per lavorare per Harper’s Weekly. Non era fino all'età di 26 anni che ha assunto la pittura, praticamente insegnandosi. Homer ha eseguito diversi studi di grafite e acquerelli raffiguranti il soggetto di due giovani donne che camminano braccio in braccio attraverso la natura. Dipinse spesso le attività delle donne americane contemporanee, qui ritraendo le uscite all'aperto piacevoli che erano popolari in questo momento.
