El gran pintor alemán Holbein pasó gran parte de su vida en Inglaterra, empleado por los patronos privados y la Corte. Entre sus principales comisiones para Enrique VIII se encontraba un mural en Whitehall Palace que mostraba al Rey y a su esposa, Jane Seymour, acompañado por Henry VII y Elizabeth de York. El mural fue destruido por el fuego en el siglo XVII, pero varias copias de la sección que muestran a Enrique VIII sobreviven, de las cuales probablemente este es el mejor. En esta figura masiva, suntuosamente vestida, orgullosa y desafiante, Holbein creó una de las imágenes más poderosas e inolvidables de la realeza.
