Il primo libro dei re nella Bibbia (3:16-28) racconta la storia di come il re Salomone doveva passare il giudizio in un caso riguardante due prostitute che vivevano nella stessa casa e avevano partorito allo stesso tempo. Uno dei bambini è morto poco dopo, e ora entrambe le donne hanno rivendicato il bambino vivente come loro. La saggezza e il senso di giustizia del re Salomone lo portarono ad avere una spada portata e ad ordinare il bambino vivente in due affinché le donne potessero condividerlo.
