Questo dipinto celebra la famiglia e l'amicizia. È un ritratto toccante della famiglia dell'artista Jan Brueghel dal suo caro amico e collaboratore Peter Paul Rubens. La moglie di Brueghel, Catharina, è nel cuore di questo intimo gruppo, circondato dai suoi figli Pieter e Elisabeth. Le loro mani si incontrano teneramente al centro. Rubens aggiunse la figura di Brueghel in una fase tardiva, dipingendolo sul fondo scuro. La famiglia Brueghel indossa i loro vestiti migliori e sono presentati come ricchi cittadini di Anversa. I braccialetti di Catharina devono essere stati particolarmente significativi per la coppia. Il loro figlio Pieter tocca uno di loro e appaiono anche in diversi dipinti di Brueghel stesso, tra cui quello illustrato di seguito. La datazione del lavoro si basa sulle età percepite dai bambini. Entrambi morirono, insieme al padre, durante l'epidemia di colera del 1625.
