Peter Paul Rubens ha fatto questo grande disegno in preparazione per il dipinto a sinistra. Anche se la composizione finale è cambiata in modo significativo, alcuni elementi chiave sono già presenti qui: gli uomini che aiutano il paolo colpito in primo piano; la figura che frena il suo cavallo; e il cane antipasto accanto a loro. Dipinto rapidamente, lo schizzo ha permesso a Rubens di scovare le idee iniziali. Questi furono poi sviluppati in un grande disegno, anche in The Courtauld. Dopo aver completato The Conversion of Saint Paul, Rubens tenne sia lo schizzo che il disegno nel suo studio come possibili modelli per le opere future.
