Peter Paul Rubens a fait ce grand croquis en préparation du tableau à gauche. Bien que la composition finale ait considérablement changé, certains éléments clés sont déjà présents ici: les hommes aidant Paul frappé au premier plan, la figure retenant son cheval, et le chien surpris à côté d'eux. Peint rapidement, l'esquisse permettait à Rubens de faire tomber les idées initiales. Ceux-ci ont été développés plus tard dans un grand dessin, également dans The Courtauld. Après avoir terminé La conversion de Saint Paul, Rubens a gardé à la fois croquis et dessin dans son atelier comme modèles possibles pour les travaux futurs.
