In una scena fissata di notte per aumentare il suo impatto, Cristo appare in una luce accecante al soldato romano Paolo, che cade dal suo cavallo mentre i suoi compagni si disperdono. Una volta persecutore di cristiani, Paolo si converte istantaneamente e diventa afollower di Cristo. Peter Paul Rubens sfrutta il pieno effetto di questa scena drammatica mentre il panico colpisce i cavalli e i cavalieri. L'uso di una forte illuminazione e di una composizione compressa sono tipici del suo lavoro poco dopo il ritorno ad Anversa dall'Italia nel 1608.
