Il ritratto è datato 1602, durante il soggiorno mantovano di Rubens. La figura femminile, detta “Lady of the Licnidi” dopo i fiori intrecciati nei capelli, sembra parte di una serie di famose donne dipinte da Rubens per il duca Vincenzo Gonzaga. La fanteria spagnola Isabella Clara Eugenia, figlia di Filippo II, patrono e protettore di Rubens, è stata proposta come la babysitter.
