Dans son inscription, Wu Li rapporte qu'il a peint ce handcroll un matin clair après une pluie, assis seul dans son studio en pensant à un ami absent. Il y a une qualité de rêve dans la peinture: oiseaux, arbres, bambou, brouillard, et même des rochers dansent joyeusement autour de l'ermite-scolaire, qui se trouve tranquillement dans son domaine idyllique. Bien qu'il ait été un ardent admirateur de Huang Gongwang (1269–1354), Wu a transformé les traits de texture du peintre Yuan en un style distinctement personnel : des textures d'encre pâle dans des motifs contrastés complexes, silhouettes et suspendues dans l'espace, ont été appliquées à la fois avec une vigueur d'athlète et une cadence douce de poète. En 1681, deux ans après avoir peint cette œuvre, Wu Li fut baptisé chrétien, chose la plus rare à faire pour un homme de son passé. Ordonné prêtre à Macao en 1688, il fut envoyé en 1689 pour accomplir une œuvre missionnaire à Shanghai, où il mourut en 1718.
