Xu iniziò a dipingere questo grande lavoro nel 1928 e lo completò prima del 1930, mentre fu impiegato alla National Central University. Tian Heng e i suoi cinquecento follower raffigurano una storia di Records del Grand Historian. Dopo che Liu Bang si proclamò imperatore della dinastia Han (206 a.C.-220 d.C.), offrì l'amnistia a Tian Heng. Se Tian non accettasse, Liu lo ucciderebbe.
