Xu begann diese große Arbeit im Jahre 1928 zu malen und beendete sie vor 1930, während er an der National Central University beschäftigt war. Tian Heng und seine fünfhundert Follower zeigen eine Geschichte von Records of the Grand Historian. Nachdem Liu Bang sich Kaiser der Han-Dynastie (206 BC–220 n. Chr.) verkündete, bot er Tian Heng Amnestie an. Wenn Tian nicht akzeptiert hätte, würde Liu ihn töten.
