Dietro Sono stato tratto da una storia in The Classic of History che descrive la brutalità dell'ultimo imperatore Jie di Xia. Il re Tang di Shang guidò le sue truppe a punire il despota, perché la gente sofferente desiderava che un esercito li salvasse. Ha sempre detto: “Succor mi seguirà.”Il lavoro è stato creato intorno al tempo dell’Incidente di Mukden del 1931, in cui i giapponesi hanno invaso la Cina. Le autorità cinesi hanno preso un atteggiamento passivo verso l'incursione, ma Xu Beihong ha usato questo lavoro per presentare le persone oppresse che bramano la liberazione.
