Ursprünglich Büste-Länge, wurde dieses Gemälde später geschnitten. Velázquezs Ähnlichkeit von María Teresa mit einer Perücke mit Schmetterlingsbändern diente als Modell für seine Assistenten zu kopieren, wie sie die hohe Nachfrage nach offiziellen Porträts der jungen Prinzessin erfüllten. Die Tochter des Königs Philip IV., María Teresa, erhielt die Aufmerksamkeit der Gegner in ganz Europa, die ihr Aussehen vor allem aus der Zirkulation dieser Porträts gewusst hätten. In einer mächtigen 1660 politischen Allianz heiratete sie ihren ersten Cousin Louis XIV und wurde Königin von Frankreich.
