Zhu è stato influenzato da suo nonno Xu Youzhen (1407 - 1472) e suocero Li Yingzhen (1431 - 1493), entrambi adept a calligrafia. Con la sua ricca collezione di famiglia, Zhu ha studiato le opere delle dinastie Wei e Jin nella sua età media. Il suo piccolo script regolare è stato ereditato da quello di Zhong You (151 - 230) e Wang Xizhi (303 - 361), mentre il suo script cursivo è stato modellato dopo quello di Huaisu (725 - 785) e Huang Tingjian (1045 - 1105). Il suo amore per la libertà e l'adesione agli antichi maestri si riflettono nella sua calligrafia, che si basava sugli stili dei maestri Jin e Tang, ma anche eseguiti in maniera espressiva e inibita. La poesia su Encountering Sorrow in Running Script è stata scritta da Zhu nel primo della sua vita, e dimostra la sua padronanza della calligrafia ad un alto livello.
