Questo debonair primo ritratto di Vernet, un pittore di battaglia leader del XIX secolo, è pensato per raffigurare una delle centinaia di mediorientali che cercarono rifugio in Francia dopo l'insuccessa invasione dell'Egitto di Napoleone nel 1798-1801. Il nome del signore è sconosciuto, ma è identificabile dai suoi capi come membro del corpo di Mamluks, conscritto da Napoleone come parte dell'esercito francese. I loro ranghi furono poi riempiti da francesi nativi; elementi del loro vestito permearono la moda civile.
